Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza also addressed media at the scene, fielding questions in both English and Spanish.
Providence police said nine people were shot in a mass shooting Thursday.
The shooting happened just before 7 p.m. on Carolina Avenue.
At a news conference Thursday night, Colonel Hugh Clements said an assailant stopped in a car and began shooting at a house on that street. The people in that house responded to the fire, he added.
The chief said that four or five different weapons were involved.
The two groups know each other, and this is an ongoing dispute, Clements said, adding that there is no threat to the public.
Mayor Jorge Elorza said there will be more police patrols in the area Thursday night.
Clements said those who were shot were taken to hospital. One of them was taken by ambulance.
Police said three people were seriously injured, while the others suffered minor injuries.
The chief said he believes this is the most casualties they have ever had in a single shooting.
No arrests have been made. Clements emphasized that the investigation is in its early stages. Detectives were at the hospital interviewing the victims, who are between 19 and 25 years old. No further details were released about their identities.
He said police have gone to great lengths to get the weapons off the streets and therefore called the shooting “very disappointing.” The suspects and the victims “could be the same,” she said, without providing further details.
“There will be names that you might recognize; we certainly know it from police work, ”Clements told reporters.
Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza also addressed the media at the scene, answering questions in both English and Spanish.
“I spoke to several neighbors and they are all shocked,” he said, adding that he promised additional patrols and neighborhood security for the next few days.
Prior to this shooting, Providence had seen 19 shooting victims and seven shooting homicide victims in 2021, Clements said.
Elorza also urged city residents to stop using firearm violence to resolve disputes and criticized the immediate availability of weapons.
“This has to end,” Elorza said. “The young people involved, believing that the way to resolve their disputes is with a gun, I mean, that can’t be the way.”
