Turner, 27, who uses the pronouns They / She, won the House of Representatives elections in Oklahoma’s 88th District. She is also the first Muslim person to be elected to the state legislature.
The Democratic Community organizer beat Republican candidate Kelly Barlean with about 71% of the vote. The campaign focused on issues such as judicial reform, public education, wages, and integrated health care.
Turner said they were running for election because they believed Oklahomans with their “shared life experience” were not represented.
Turner is said to have grown up in a single parent family because his father was incarcerated for years and “lived on SNAP benefits” as a child. His mother had up to three jobs and the family struggled to stay afloat.
Before continuing his political campaign, Turner was the field director of the Campaign for Smart Justice, a criminal justice reform project led by the American Civil Liberties Union.
According to the Victory Fund’s Out on the Trail report, a historic number of gender and non-binary people ran for political office in 2020, with 17 campaigns underway that year, up from just four in 2018. It shows a whopping increase from 325 %. .
