Who is Matthew Boulter ?

A man who bit a police dog on the head and assaulted a police officer during an arrest has been jailed for eight months.

Matthew Boulter, 34, from Grimsby, was arrested on the night of Sunday 14th August after police received reports that he was seen assaulting three people and causing criminal damage outside a location in Bethlehem Street, Grimsby.

Arrested and Charged

Grimsby Magistrates Court heard that Boulter was being arrested on assault charges, punched and kicked a fence towards the Humberside Police officer, causing him minor injuries.

He then bit the police dog Xander on the head and grabbed him by the collar before twisting it.

The force says that PD Xander made a full recovery and was at work the next day.

Detective Sergeant Thomas Crosfill said: “Assaulting emergency services workers is not acceptable, and our police dogs provide us with vital assistance.” They are part of the police family.

“The above incidents occurred in a very public place and will have caused distress to victims and bystanders.

“We want to make sure our cities are safe for people to live, work and visit, so I am pleased that Boulter was quickly arrested and sentenced for these crimes.

“Fortunately, PD Xander quickly made a full recovery and was back at work the next day.”

It is not the first time that police dogs have been attacked in the line of duty.

PD Logan, who retired in June, served with the Humberside Police for seven and a half years, during which time he was shot three times.

Boulter was sentenced in court on Tuesday, August 16, to eight months behind bars after pleading guilty to assaulting an emergency services worker, causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, assault, criminal mischief and two counts of assault.
