Mickey Rourke put a knife to his throat, a young actress offered him sex for a role in a movie, and he sought out Robert Redford and Demi Moore as porn stars.

It’s all part of the work of one of the best casting directors in Hollywood.

DailyMail.com has also exclusively obtained Barry’s audition photos of Hollywood’s best actors, some dating back to when they were discovered and did not have a single movie on their résumé.

The 59-year-old movie industry insider has released blockbusters like Rush Hour, Con Air, She She’s So Lovely, Freddy vs. Jason, Mars Attacks! and Alpha Dog.

Amid a series of explosive anecdotes from her decades of auditioning and friendships with top celebrities, the casting director and acting coach revealed that she even auditioned Britney Spears at the height of her career in the early 2000s for the title role. in The Notebook.

How old is Matthew Barry?

September 5, 1962 (age 58 years), New York, New York, United States.

McAdams was a relatively obscure actress and it was a ‘close call’ between her and Britney.

Barry said it was close, but the role ultimately went to then-unknown actress Rachel McAdams, who won the audition and later credited Barry with making her career.

However, not all casting director auditions were so enjoyable, and some were even life-threatening.

Speaking to DailyMail.com, Barry recalled a poignant moment when he auditioned Mickey Rourke for the role of Cyrus in Nicholas Cage’s film Con Air.

“This was at the height of Mickey’s madness when he was shooting at his houses and [supposedly] hitting his girlfriends,” Barry said.

‘So we call Mickey and there’s a whole film crew there. Jerry is there [producer Jerry Bruckheimer], and I do the Nicholas Cage lines. It’s a great confrontation scene.

Mickey is smoking a cigarette on the scene, in an office. I said, “You’re a fucking Grissom gargoyle!” Mickey looks over and puts his hand behind his back. I hear ‘click’ and I’m like, ‘oh fuck’.

“ He stands up, approaches me, the camera was mounted so that the cameraman was trying to judge him. He pulls out a knife, puts it to my throat and says, “What are you saying?”

Barry recalled Bradley Cooper’s ‘intense’ demeanor in auditions

I am looking for a vacancy. I have never looked anyone in the eye and have seen an empty space.

‘And he is standing there, there is a confrontation and no one is quite sure what to do. He takes a drag on his cigarette and blows it in my face, puts out the cigarette in my jeans and we finish the scene.

Then there was deathly silence in the room. Silence of death. He says, “Thanks guys” and walks away.

‘[Barry’s colleague] Vicky says, “Are you okay?” I said I didn’t screw up, I didn’t screw up, I think I’m fine. ‘

Other stars had hers of their own emotional roller coasters at her auditions, such as Amanda Seyfreid, when she attempted a role in Alpha Dog immediately after filming the cult classic Mean Girls that would later catapult her to stardom.

“She comes in and sits down and starts crying,” Barry said. She said, “I just don’t want to be here. I want to go home, I’m tired and I miss my family, and I don’t want to be in your stupid movie.”

“We were like” stupid movie? Why not? “And she knew everything about the movie and the character, she just went on and on.

Then she said, “Can I go?” And we said “no, no, let’s just talk a little bit.” We literally held her for an hour, crying the entire time. But she had the part in three minutes. ”

The 59-year-old explained that his work is largely intuitive, often knowing instantly when a future top-tier actor enters the room.

‘It is an energy. You feel it, ” he said. No teacher can teach it. Everything in you enters through that door, good or bad, and you feel it.

Olivia Wilde was cast as streetwise tough nut Angela Holden

‘Most of the time they suck. You may have the energy but not the talent. There are also those who are extremely talented, but you need to work with them, and you support them. ‘

Barry says that some actors, like Seyfreid, get the part in moments and others are fired before they even enter the room.

“When we started The Notebook, the studio wanted Kate Beckinsale. Nick [Cassavetes, the director] met her and there was no chemistry, ”she said.

‘We consider Hayden Christensen. We went to the opening of whatever Star Wars episode he was in, but we left after 20 minutes. ‘

Barry said that personal connections are often the key to entering the room, but that talent is essential once you enter.

“Mark Ruffalo had absolutely nothing on his resume when I saw him,” said Barry, who auditioned for the Avengers star in 1994 for a role in Crimson Tide.

‘No movies, no television, only theater. His agent at the time, Chris Schmidt, was a good friend and said that we should meet this excellent actor. We did it.

Cuba Gooding Jr.

‘It was very intense. Mark has always been intense. But we ended up hiring Viggo Mortensen, who is even more intense.

“We were going to hire Cuba Gooding Jr. but then they offered him too much money to do Pandemic.”

The casting director added that Bradley Cooper was equally intense and relatively unknown when she came to him to audition for the 2002 thriller John Q.

Bradley was also strange and intense. You couldn’t put a lock on it. He has a wicked but very intense sense of humor, ” Barry said.

“I think we were auditioning him for The Notebook, because we needed a handsome guy for the role that James Marsden ended up getting.”

Barry said Jennifer Garner’s CV was completely empty when he put her in front of a camera.

I auditioned for Jennifer in New York. She had just gotten out of school and had literally done nothing. Just theater, ” he said. “She was casting [1996 film] Unhook the Stars and she had just gotten off the ship.

‘She was so sweet, as sweet as she can be. But she didn’t have the upper hand for the role.

Jennifer Garner was also inexperienced

‘We wanted Renee Zellweger, who came in and smashed her audition. But she did this weird thing by biting her bottom lip and the producer couldn’t stand it. So we broke up with Moira Kelly. ‘

Although he was very attracted to Eva Mendez, Barry said that he never found a role for her.

“ I thought she was beautiful and talented and I was trying to hire her for anything. We never did, but that didn’t stop me from bringing it movie after movie, ” he said.

He was very close in Rush Hour 2, but Roselyn Sánchez did it. We broke Roselyn’s career with that movie.

Barry also recalled a poignant moment when Mickey Rourke (pictured from 1998) held a knife to his throat during his audition for the 1997 thriller Con Air +56.

The veteran Hollywood insider said that once a star is on the rise, it quickly becomes very difficult to get them into a movie, giving Margot Robbie as an example.

He auditioned for The Other Woman. This was before he left Wolf of Wall Street, ”he said.

‘[Hollywood’s main agency] CAA called us and said,’ You better grab this girl while you can. ‘ She was just adorable. It all came down to her and Kate Upton and of course Kate got it.

Barry said that while unscrupulous filmmakers have abused their power over young actresses for decades, some are so desperate for roles that offer sex in the blink of an eye, including one actress who suggestively told him that she would “ do anything ” for a piece of paper. even as his business partner sat in the room with him.

He said he politely declined the outrageous offer.

Other stars have survived tireless work, he said.

The casting director said that he gave Terry Crews his first major role on Friday After Next after seeing him working as a security guard on a film set.

Jared Leto, 49, got his first big break in ABC drama My So-Called Life in 1994 and later gained

“Anyone who can walk into the office and can strip down to a bikini has balls in my opinion,” she said.

She has always been like this. Her performance is outstanding in The Lady in the Window, and she has always been brave and daring. ‘

The son of a theater director, Barry grew up in 1970s New York surrounded by actors.

As an aspiring star, he got his first big break with a role in Bernardo Bertolucci’s Luna, after the director’s wife saw the head shot of her on top of a pile of rejections.

‘It was a bit overwhelming for me, all the attention. I was dating Woody Allen, he invited me over to his house and he was dating Dianne Keaton, ” Barry said.

And when the 17-year-old found himself standing next to lottery legend Warren Beatty at the film’s 1979 premiere, he said he couldn’t miss out on some dating advice.

‘I said’ how do you get all these beautiful women? ‘Beatty laughed and said’ let them talk, just listen ‘. He was correct. ‘

Actor Terrance Howard, 52, is  in his headshots years before finding success

Barry’s first big break as a casting director came when he was hired to help cast the 1993 film Indecent Proposal for famed director Adrian Lyne.

It wasn’t long before Lyne approached him on set with his own un-decent proposal.

‘Adrian came up to me one day and said, “Matt, I need you to find me some couples that look like Robert and Demi and I want them to jam.”

I said, “What do you mean you want them to have sex?” “Yes Yes.” I said “Adrian, that’s porn.” He said, “Yes. You can find that for me, right?”

In a stroke of luck, Barry played baseball with adult film star Randy West, nicknamed ‘the Robert Redford of pornography’ for his resemblance to the legendary actor.
Barry revealed how he once had to search for actors Robert Redford and Demi Moore for porn stars in the 1993 film Indecent Proposal (left) for famed director Adrian Lyne, who wanted the characters to have on-screen sex. Barry finally found adult film actor Randy West (right) to play Redford

Lyne, he said, was delighted with West.

Barry said auditions with bombastic actors can be just as unpredictable as the filmmakers he worked with.

“To be a great actor you need to have some kind of dysfunction,” he said.

Now Barry spends much of his time as an acting coach, teaching his students how to develop his craft and master his auditions.

“I’ve launched a lot of careers from a casting perspective, but now it’s fun teaching them how to do it right, how to survive, because it’s not easy,” she said.

“Every year thousands and thousands of young adults and youth come to Los Angeles in search of fame and fortune.

‘After that first year there are 1,000 left. After the second year, there are 100 left, and of those 10 they will make it. ‘
