Who was Matiss Kivlenieks?
Matiss Kivlenieks passed away Sunday night, according to a statement from the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was only 24 years old.
Blue Jackets goalkeeper Matiss Kivlenieks died Sunday night as a result of an accident, the team confirmed.
A statement released by the team on Monday said Kivlenieks, 24, suffered a head injury in a fall and died shortly after. Medical personnel were called immediately.
A source close to Kivlenieks said the janitor was in Novi, Michigan, when the accident occurred. The source said Kivlenieks was accidentally hit by a firework. The team statement does not mention the participation of the fireworks.

“We are shocked and saddened by the loss of Matiss Kivlenieks, and we express our deepest condolences to his mother, Astrida, his family and friends during this devastating time. Kivi was an outstanding young man who greeted everyone with a smile every day and the impact he had during his four years with our organization will not be forgotten ”.
Originally from Latvia, Kivlenieks signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets in May 2017.
Kivlenieks made his NHL debut in January 2020 when he stopped 31 of 32 shots against the New York Rangers, leading the Blue Jackets to a 2-1 victory.
Over the course of four years, Kivlenieks was 33-35-9 with 3.31 goals against average and a .896 save percentage in 85 games in his career with the Cleveland Monsters.
