He also confessed to drugging them and in some cases drinking his blood.
He reportedly returned to the home of his parents, who disowned him, and was subsequently strangled by neighbors who learned he was there, a witness told the Standard of Kenya newspaper.
He tried to avoid suspicious locals by moving into a nearby home, the Bungoma police commander told the newspaper.
His family is believed to have identified the body.
“We are not sure how he managed to travel from Nairobi to his rural home,” Musyoki Mutungi said. “It was the curious villagers who first identified him and proceeded to kill him even before the police were reported.”
Wanjala posed as a soccer coach to lure his victims to secluded areas, after which he attacked them.
In some cases he took them hostage for ransom.
Following his arrest in July, he led the police to the burial sites of his victims, where the bodies have since been recovered.
Three police officers who were on duty when he escaped Wednesday were charged with helping a suspect escape and with negligence.
Police say they noticed he was missing during the morning roll call.
There are also growing calls for the resignation of the Kenyan police chief over the escape, which shocked the nation.
