See told jurors the fire was an accident and denied wanting to harm his mother.

He claimed that he picked up the milk carton, which he used to store gas for a lawn mower, to scare his mother into thinking he was going to do “something stupid” to himself.

They had been arguing about Mrs Hughes’s role as carer for Mrs See, when his mother turned on him and said that she wanted her to leave her.

See said the bottle ignited when he lit a cigarette and instinctively dropped it to the ground, setting off the catastrophic fire.

He said that he tried to save his mother from him, but had to flee after the flames became too strong.
