Marissa Pérez Cardona is better known as the wife of Miguel Cardona. He is an American educator who has served as Connecticut Commissioner of Education since 2019. On December 22, 2020, President-elect Joe Biden nominated Cardona to serve as the United States Secretary of Education in his cabinet.

Born in Meriden, Connecticut, Cardona began her career as a fourth grade teacher at Israel Putnam School. In 2003, at the age of 27, he was appointed principal of the Hanover School, also in Meriden, making him the youngest principal in the state.

Cardona grew up speaking Spanish as his first language and had trouble learning English when he started kindergarten. He grew up on a housing project in Meriden and graduated from H.C. Wilcox Technical High School, where he was part of the Automotive Studies program.

Cardona earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Central Connecticut State University in 1997. She earned a Master of Science in bilingual and bicultural education from the University of Connecticut (UConn) in 2001. In 2004, she completed a sixth-year professional certification. at UConn, where he obtained a Ph.D. in Education in 2011.

Cardona’s dissertation entitled, Sharpening the Political Will Approach to Addressing Achievement Disparities, studied the gaps between English learners and their classmates. Cardona’s principal doctoral advisor was Barry G. Sheckley and her associate advisor was Casey D. Cobb.

Cardona began her career as a fourth grade teacher at Israel Putnam Elementary School in Meriden, Connecticut. In 2003, at Hanover Elementary School, he was promoted and named the youngest principal in state history in ten years. From 2015 to 2019, Cardona served as the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning in her hometown. Cardona was also an adjunct professor of education in the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of Connecticut. During his career, he has focused on closing the gaps between English learners and their peers.

In August 2019, Governor Ned Lamont appointed Cardona Commissioner of Education; Cardona is the first Latino to be appointed to the position.

Cardona came to Biden’s attention through Linda Darling-Hammond, the leader of the transition efforts, which she also did for Barack Obama in 2008. Darling-Hammond and Cardona have worked together on multiple projects. Politico noted that “Hispanic legislators are emphasizing in particular the need for a Latina to join the administration.”

In December 2020, although no final decision has been made, Cardona emerged as a candidate for United States Secretary of Education in President-elect Joe Biden’s cabinet. Biden began to lean towards Cardona over two other “high profile” teacher union leaders, Lily Eskelsen Garcia and Randi Weingarten. By seemingly picking Cardona over these two, Biden “appears to have evaded any sibling rivalry between the NEA and the AFT.”

Biden described Cardona as a “champion of public education for life” who “understands that our children are the strings of the kites that keep our ambitions aloft.
