                      Marcia Hathaway Biography

Who was Marcia Hathaway?

That victim was Marcia Hathaway, a glamorous local stage and radio actress, who died after being savagely attacked by a bull shark in three feet of water just offshore at Sugarloaf Bay in Middle Harbour.

Mrs Hathaway, 32, was on board a boat with friends in Sydney Harbor on a clear 30°C day on January 28, 1963, when she was challenged to prove that she could swim.

Causes of Death

Mrs. Hathaway was dragged into deep water in Middle Harbor by the bull shark, which locals believe was later caught and put on display

Like a scene from a horror movie, she slipped over the edge and soon after fell into the jaws of a bull shark, the species considered the greatest threat to humans because of how far it swims in river systems.

At first, Ms. Hathaway, who was paddling calmly in thigh-deep water, said she thought an octopus had taken hold of her right calf, according to Mosman Collective.

“I heard Marcia scream ‘Oh my God,’ and then they dragged her into deep water,” her fiancé, Frederick Knight, later said.

He ran through the water after her and surprisingly at one point straddled the shark’s back as he struggled to free Mrs. Hathaway.By now the shark had swooped down again to sink its teeth into his thigh. Photos of her body, which are too graphic to publish, showed her legs mangled as if they had been crushed by industrial machinery in the attack.

The water turned bright red with her blood when Mr. Knight and another friend of hers, James Delmege, freed her and laid her on the beach.

Nearby boat owners who witnessed the scene used bed sheets on board to make tourniquets.

Bleeding profusely, she was put on another boat, accompanied by Mr. Knight. An ambulance met the victim at Mowbray Point, but the dying woman’s fate was sealed when the ambulance broke down.

Considered by locals to be one of the best kept secrets in East Sydney, the beach was packed with dozens of swimmers, paddlers and rock fishermen at the time.

They were alerted to the danger by the swimmer’s deafening screams, but could do nothing but watch in shock as the monstrous shark ripped the swimmer in two and “swallowed parts of his body”.

Shocking Footage

Shocking footage shows the predator writhing in the ocean and dragging its victim underwater as the sea turns red with blood, causing panic on the coast.

The scenes were just as confrontational as emergency services workers and first responders dispatched in boats, rescue helicopters and jet skis deployed in a frantic search for the swimmer and killer predator.

“The footage clearly shows a body, half a body being taken by a shark,” a police officer told his colleagues through a scanner when human remains were found an hour later.
