Who is Malka Leifer ?
Former ultra-Orthodox school principal Malka Leifer will be tried on child s*xual abuse charges in Melbourne next year.
Leifer, 55, pleaded not guilty to 70 counts of child s*xual abuse after she was ordered to stand trial earlier this month, and just days later another 20 charges of the same nature were brought against her.wikipedia
She is alleged to have abused sisters Dassi Erlich, Nicole Meyer and Elly Sapper during her time at Adass Israel School in Melbourne’s inner suburbs between 2004 and 2008.
Leifer faced an instruction hearing in Victoria County Court on Thursday when Clerk Matthew Phillips confirmed that his case would go to trial in 2022.
“It will certainly be next year,” she confirmed, adding that she would be put on the list as soon as the legal teams could organize.
He said he was aware that Leifer had been in custody for a long period of time and was eager to move the case forward.
Leifer appeared again via video link from Melbourne’s Dame Phyllis Frost Women’s Prison. She said nothing during the hearing and sat with her head down, resting a hand on her chin.
The trial is expected to last three to four weeks, with evidence from all three complainants.
Prosecutor Stephanie Clancy noted that Ms. Sapper would not be available to present evidence between mid-May and August of next year, so a trial would need to be arranged on those dates.
Prosecutors have until February to prepare their indictment and summary of the charges, with the defense granted until March 4 to respond.
Leifer’s case is due again in County Court on March 16.
