Hebden first appeared on Coronation Street from 1974 to 1975, as Carlos, Mavis Riley’s (Thelma Barlow) Spanish boyfriend. He first appeared as Norris Cole in 1994; he left in 1997, before returning to the role in December 1999. He also appeared in the first episode of the first season of Heartbeat. In 1999, Hebden made a brief but energetic appearance as a pharmacist in the television movie Lost for Words, alongside Pete Postlethwaite, Anne Reid and Thora Hird.
Together with his on-screen business partner Barbara Knox (Rita Sullivan), Hebden won the award for best on-screen partnership at the British Soap Awards in May 2006. The 81-year-old made the decision to retire after suffering a near-fatal heart attack. In 2017, the actor suffered a “silent heart attack” that occurred without warning signs.
The condition was so bad that he left a hole in his heart’s left ventricle and his chances of survival remained slim. After an emergency operation, the actor went into an induced coma for three weeks.
Speaking about the ordeal, Malcolm told the Blackpool Gazette: “Most of December I was in an induced coma, taking care of these brilliant and wonderful people in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU).
“Fortunately I didn’t realize how bad it was; I was dying.
“The cardiac team, headed by Mr Zacharias, simply saved my life.”
The actor who won the award for funniest character at the Inside Soap Awards in 2001 and 2002 had his heart “wallpaper” by doctors to save the damage that had caused the heart attack. Surprisingly, the team did this by taking tissue from a cow.
After experiencing the initial symptoms, Malcolm dismissed them as an innocent chest infection, but after his GP checked his heart, the severity of the condition was revealed.
