Who is Major General Christopher Donahue ?

The last American soldier to leave Afghanistan after 20 years of war was named Major General Christopher Donahue, who was photographed boarding the last plane to leave Kabul on Monday.

Donahue, commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division, left the country in an Air Force transport plane carrying a remaining contingent of troops from Kabul airport.

General Frank McKenzie, head of the US Central Command, said the last planes took off from Kabul airport at 3:29 p.m. Washington time on Monday, or a minute before midnight in Kabul.

Donahue has three decades of experience, serving in South Korea and Panama before leading troops in the Middle East and North Africa.

Donahue said that commanding the 82nd Airborne Division is the ‘coolest’ job of his storied career

Donahue is currently the commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division, based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

After graduating from West Point in 1992, he returned to the academy with a stint at Harvard as a fellow at the US Army War College.

He later moved to Washington, D.C., where he served as a special assistant to the chairman of the Pentagon’s joint staff.

He assumed the position of commander of the 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in July 2020 and told The Fayetteville Observer that he enjoyed the fast pace of work.

The division can be deployed anywhere in the world within 18 hours of notification, in its role as the nation’s Immediate Response Force.

“It’s absolutely the most enjoyable, rewarding, and best job I’ve ever had, hands down,” he said.

“I’ve had some really good jobs, but I tell you this is the coolest job of all.”

Before coming to 82nd, Donahue served as commander of the Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan.

“Your job is to be ready to help very quickly, and the task of securing and operating an airfield is actually a unique task that the 82nd can do and General Donahue is experienced in that,” Kirby said.

“Elements of the 82nd Airborne Division have already been flowing in to carry out the actual (airport) security mission.”

On August 17, Kirby said Donahue’s focus was on the security mission at the airport.

The airport had become a US-controlled island, a last stand in a 20-year war that claimed more than 2,400 American lives.

The last hours of the evacuation were marked by an extraordinary drama.

American troops were faced with the daunting task of getting the final evacuees to the planes while simultaneously removing themselves and some of their equipment, even while monitoring repeated threats, and at least two actual attacks, by the affiliate. of the Islamic State group in Afghanistan.

A suicide bombing on August 26 killed 13 US servicemen and some 169 Afghans.

By the time the evacuation was complete, more than 100,000 people, mostly Afghans, had been moved to safety.

The XVIII Airborne Corps, whose forces pass through the Sky Dragons, was among the last to leave Afghan soil when it concluded the total withdrawal of US forces on Monday, before the August 31 deadline.

“Amazed by our Sky Dragon Soldiers,” the XVIII Airborne Corps tweeted along with a night vision image of Donahue.

The 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions of the Army, among others, are under the command of the XVIII Airborne Corps.

‘This was an incredibly tough and pressurized mission full of multiple complexities, with threats active all the time. Our troops showed courage, discipline and empathy, ‘the body wrote in its tweet.

He added: “Below is a picture of the last soldier to leave Afghanistan.”

The Pentagon announced the end of the US war in Afghanistan on Monday afternoon after 20 years and the deaths of nearly 2,500 soldiers.

Biden will comment on the historic occasion Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses in Kabul said the Taliban fired celebratory shots as news circulated that the last American flight had departed.

It means that Biden has managed to meet his Aug. 31 deadline and steers American personnel out of harm’s way.

But he comes at the cost of allowing a militant group to retake the country.
