Madelynne Rawle Biography
Who is Madelynne Rawle ?
The deputy director of a nursing home with mental health problems has been jailed for two and a half years for cruelty to seven vulnerable residents.
Detectives launched an investigation after concerned caregivers raised concerns about 61-year-old Assistant Manager Madelynne Rawle to the local authority, who then reported it to police.
The crimes occurred at the Summerley nursing home in Bognor, West Sussex, where Rawle was working in 2018 after joining two years earlier.wikipedia
The investigation found that Rawle slapped residents, pulled their hair, spat on them, sat on them, forced them to sit, and was verbally abusive.
The seven victims, six women and one man, were at home as they needed 24-hour care for daily activities, including basic hygiene and dressing, as well as help with eating.
All but two have since died, for unrelated reasons.
The indictment, authorized by the Crown Prosecution Service, followed an investigation by detectives from the West Sussex Safeguard Investigations Unit.
In June 2021, Rawle pleaded guilty to two counts of willful mistreatment and neglect of two incapacitated persons under the Mental Capacity Act of 2005.
She was found guilty of other charges of the same crime against five residents and she was not found guilty of one of those crimes.
Rawle, of Bognor, received a 30-month prison term when she was sentenced at Portsmouth Crown Court in Hampshire on October 15.
Sussex Police Detective Sarah Lallament said: ‘Rawle’s victims were vulnerable adults who needed 24/7 support for daily activities, including basic hygiene and dressing, and help to eat.
Staff began to feel uncomfortable with Rawle’s conduct and took advantage of a change in senior management in late 2018 to voice their concerns to the local authority, who immediately contacted us and we initiated an investigation.
“The current management of the house gave us their full cooperation, and this contributed to the positive outcome of our investigation.”
“It is a specialized home, and family members and the public would expect the care of their family members to be of a good standard rather than subject to the verbal and physical abuse that Rawle subjected them to for many months. ‘
