Who is Lydia Ellery ?
A gamer who has called himself the Squid Game for the past decade has been inundated with ‘hate’ from fans of the Netflix show.
Lydia Ellery chose her name from her online gaming channel because of her nickname ‘Squid’ hers.
But she has since lost her presentation job and her various social media accounts were hacked by enraged fans who believe she stole the Korean series name.
The Bristol-based streamer set up her Twitch and Instagram profiles as Squid Game 11 years ago. On Twitter, she uses SquidGaming.
She has 42,300 followers on Twitch, where her fans can watch her play various video games, and she is a member of Yogscast, which has more than seven million YouTube subscribers.wikipedia
Instead of the brand she spent 11 years building, Google searches now only show results related to the series.
“I feel depressed about the whole situation and incredibly fed up,” she said.
Ms Ellery told the BBC that she was ‘just a stupid name’ that she made up ‘on the spot’, but she now has to consider changing it. She added: ‘My friends called me squid because it rhymes with tapa, and my name is Lydia.’

She is 32 year old.
Ms Ellery said you may have to change your name due to the naming conflict
This year, the name took on a new meaning when a Korean TV series became a Netflix smash hit.
The series tells the story of a group of people in debt who sign up for a show that promises to solve their problems, before forcing them to play deadly childhood games.
It was viewed by 142 million households around the world in its first four weeks.
The show itself doesn’t have an Instagram account, and Netflix uses its own account to advertise it, so Ms Ellery was inundated with messages.wikipedia
She said: ‘I was inundated with people tagging me or texting me thinking I was the show.’
And some social media users were furious at the player for taking the account name, even though it had been active for a decade.
Ms. Ellery was banned from her account multiple times, forcing her to reset passwords, and she lost job opportunities because companies believe she is associated with the program.
It comes after Squid Game was blamed for an increase in the number of children needing skin grafts for severe burns after they tried to replicate one of the games.
The second challenge on the popular Netflix show is that contestants try to break the edges of a honeycomb cookie until there is only one shape left in the middle. Those who fail are executed.
The viral ‘honeycomb challenge’ sees fans making the candy from scratch at home, which involves melting the sugar at 150 ° C to create the sticky mixture, which sticks to the skin like glue.
Specialist burn units across the country have been affected by a number of children between the ages of 11 and 15 who suffered serious injuries since the launch of the program.
The British Burn Association (BBA) posted an image of a burned hand on Twitter, writing: ‘Burn services are seeing an increase in burn injuries following the #squidgame trend and #honeycomb social media. Many require surgery to be treated. ‘
Professor Kayvan Shokrollahi, vice president of the BBA, is concerned that the increasing number of children injured after copying the trend could be the “tip of the iceberg.”
Google searches for ‘honeycomb recipe’ have skyrocketed in the UK since the show launched last month.
