Luis Peroza has been arrested for allegedly attacking the 90-year-old owner of Ray’s Candy Store in the East Village.
The energetic victim returned to work the next day but ultimately required medical attention and checked into Beth Israel Hospital Thursday night, where doctors treated him for extensive injuries.
Alvarez, who also has a dislocated jaw and can only eat through a straw, said the beating would never have happened if there were more police officers patrolling the neighborhood.
“I have three broken bones, one here [the side of the face], one in the cheek, one in the eye, my jaw is dislocated,” Álvarez said after the beating.
He was randomly attacked around 3 a.m. Tuesday by a stranger who asked if he wanted to buy a package he was carrying, police said.
When Alvarez asked what was inside the box, the criminal handed it over to another man and threatened to kill the old man, police said.
“They had soda. They wanted to sell me. I said no. One hit my head and chest. With one hand [the soda] to the other guy, ‘Hold this, I’m going to kill this guy,'” Álvarez recalled Thursday, adding: “I couldn’t believe it.”

“There is a lot of crime because there are not enough police officers. We used to have police patrolling on foot, walking back and forth. No more,” added Álvarez.
“Today we inform Ray that we have identified and apprehended the perpetrator responsible for this heinous crime. A special thanks to the Warrants Section, the 9th Detective Squad and the Smart Division,” the 9th Precinct tweeted Saturday.
