Leland Rudeen, a 2-year-old girl from Cumming, died Thursday, six days after she was found immobile on her second birthday in a pool at a Marathon vacation home her family rented in the Florida Keys.
According to a Facebook post on behalf of her parents, Benjamin Rudeen, and the girl’s mother, Kristan, the girl died after “devastating” MRI results.
“Shortly after the devastating MRI results, as we prepared to make some tough decisions ahead, Leland took the decision out of our hands and began his painless decline,” the post reads. “Our little princess is resting now.”
The girl’s parents decided to donate some of her organs to save other children.
“Despite our immense loss, we have chosen to do good with what happened and we will give up to 6 babies the opportunity to live thanks to our most precious angel,” the heartbreaking post continued. “She was always very loving and she always wanted to help others. It seems right that with her death we are giving her the opportunity to save others. ”
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Leland was airlifted to a Miami hospital on April 9 after she was found in the pool at the family’s vacation home in the 100 block of Coco Plum Drive in Marathon. .
“According to detectives, the adults lost sight of the boy before finding him in the pool shortly after,” department officials said in a statement.
Those in the field immediately began bringing CPR to Leland. She was first rushed to a hospital in Marathon before being airlifted to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami.
“Foul play is not believed to be a factor in the incident,” investigators said.
Just three days before the terrible find, Benjamin Rudeen posted a photo of the smiling blonde girl, who was sitting in a chair on the beach with her hands in her lap. Then on Sunday, she desperately asked for help.
“Some of you already know that the happiest and most beautiful girl is fighting for her life after an accident while on vacation,” wrote Rudeen. “Any help is greatly appreciated. Leland’s mother and I are grateful for everything. We are lost right now and we just want our little girl to be home again.”
An online fundraiser created for Leland dwarfed $ 51,000 on Friday. According to the campaign organizer, the girl was celebrating her second birthday the day she was found.
According to the family’s post, plans are underway for a memorial service to celebrate Leland’s life.
