Plymouth shooting: Gunman’s mother among those killed as police name Jake Davison’s victims

Ms. Davison, 51, was shot and killed by her 22-year-old son, Jake Davison, at her home on Biddick Drive, Plymouth, on Thursday night.

Davison killed three-year-old Sophie, hers, her father Lee Martyn, 43, Stephen Washington, and Kate Shepherd.

Her attack lasted about six minutes before she pointed the gun at herself.

In online videos, Davison spoke of being “defeated” and “defeated by life.”

All of those who died lived in the Keyham area of Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall police said.wikipedia

How old was Lee Martyn ?

He was 43 year old.

Officers continue to investigate 13 scenes within a cordon that are expected to remain in place for much of the weekend.

After killing his mother, Davison left the property and immediately shot and killed Mr. Martyn and his daughter in the street.

Stephen Washington, 59, also died, along with Kate Shepherd, 66, who was injured at the scene and later died at Derriford Hospital.

Devon and Cornwall Police Chief Shaun Sawyer said Davison possessed licensed firearms and witnesses described the weapon he used as a “pump action shotgun.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the issue of how Davison came to legally possess a gun must be “properly investigated” as he described the shooting as an “absolutely gruesome” incident.

The Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) said it had received preliminary information that Davison’s firearm and license were returned to him in early July this year.

Police had taken the certificate and shotgun from him in December 2020 following an assault charge in September 2020, the watchdog said.

The IOPC has said it will investigate Devon and Cornwall police decision-making regarding Davison’s possession of a shotgun and shotgun certificate.

IOPC Regional Director David Ford said: “The investigation will also consider whether the force had any information about Mr. Davison’s mental health and, if so, whether this information was properly considered.”wikipedia

Mother Maxine Davison

The gunman’s mother, named by police as Maxine Davison, is among the five people killed by Jake Davison in the mass shooting in Plymouth.

A three-year-old girl who was shot by 22-year-old Jake Davison in the Keyham area was also named Sophie Martyn.

Two local residents, 53 and 33, were injured in the shooting, although their lives are not believed to be in danger.

Davison killed three other people, including Sophie’s father, Lee Martyn, 43.

Jake Davison, 22, killed five people before turning the gun on himself

Police said the incident, the worst mass shooting in Britain since 2010, was not related to terrorism. However, Davison made references to “incels” in some online social media videos.

Incels are members of online misogynistic groups of “unwilling celibates” men, who blame women for their s*xual failings and who have been linked to a number of violent acts around the world.

Davison had posted hateful rants online about single mothers and her own mother in particular, calling her “vile, dysfunctional and chaotic.”

What do we know about the victims?

Police have named the attacker’s mother, Maxine Davison, as his first victim.

The 51-year-old woman, also known as Maxine Chapman, was shot and killed inside an address on Biddick Drive.

Later, Jake Davison hit the streets and shot three-year-old Sophie Martyn and her father, 43-year-old Lee Martyn, to death.

  • Stephen Washington, 59;

  • Kate Shepherd, 66, who was injured at the scene and died later at Derriford Hospital.

Local resident Bert Pinkerton told the BBC he walked past the gunman on the street.

“I looked down, walked around the corner, the bloke was walking towards me with a black rifle. I could smell the gunfire.”

He said Davison had a “vacant stare” and he felt lucky to be alive. “It could have been me,” he said.

Neighbour Paris and Billy told the BBC they were “heartbroken” to find out the youngest victim of the gunman was aged three.

Paris said: “I feel devastated for the family it makes everything worse being a child.

She added: “Nothing’s ever going to be the same especially when it’s over the road.”

Billy said: “Its going to be different here forever now I think.”

Another local woman said she hid under a pool table to avoid “sheer violence” after hearing gunshots.

Peggy Holliday took refuge in a nearby pub and “literally clung under one of the pool tables to save her life,” she told ITV News West Country.

“I felt like they were chasing me,” she said.

Dozens of flowers, cards and stuffed animals have been left in tribute to the victims near the site.

One note read: “Rest in peace. Thoughts and prayers with all of you. A tragic loss. Such beautiful souls. Love to all.”

The gunman was named by police as Jake Davison

Earlier Friday night, Luke Pollard, MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, urged the local community to gather for a candlelight vigil at 9 p.m. Friday in North Down Crescent Park, Keyham, to render tribute to the victims.

“Today has been another really bleak and difficult day … it is important that the community come together,” Pollard said in a video on Twitter.

“Keyham is an amazing community, I know that the communities, not only in Keyham, but also in neighboring North Prospect, Ford and Stoke and Devonport will also want to pay their respects… this park is big enough for all of us.

“There will be no speeches, it will be just a moment for us to come together as a community for a moment of quiet reflection after a really grim and horrible 24 hours for our community.”

Pollard urged attendees to bring a candle, adding that if they don’t have one, “your cell phone light will work too.”
