Police say he was arrested on suspicion of rape on July 28 and later released on bail.
He is ordered to appear in Brighton magistrates’ court next month.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Laurence Knight, 33, a Met police officer, was arrested on suspicion of rape on July 28 and released on bail.
“Today (Friday) he was summoned to appear at Brighton Magistrates Court on June 23 to face a charge of rape.
“The officer was not on duty at the time of the reported crime.
Chief Superintendent Pete Gardner, in charge of Met Detention, said: “We know that people will rightly be concerned to learn of this very serious charge against a serving police officer.
Investigation
“We fully share that concern and I am grateful to Sussex Police for their thorough investigation and the continued specialist support they provide to the victim.
“The Met Directorate of Professional Standards is fully aware and matters of misconduct will be dealt with once the criminal proceedings have concluded. The officer is suspended from his duties.”
Following Sergeant Knight’s arrest, the Met made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.
The IOPC determined that the investigation of misconduct should be led by the Met.
