NY Post journalist resigns over “wrong story” about Kamala Harris
A reporter for Rupert Murdoch’s New York tabloid resigned after she claimed she was forced to write an incorrect cover story about migrants and Kamala Harris.
The New York Post published an article on April 23 titled “Kam on in,” which claimed that migrant children were being given welcome packs containing copies of the US Vice President’s 2019 picture book for children, Superheroes Are Everywhere. A follow-up article claimed that thousands of copies had been distributed.
In fact, officials said that a member of the public had donated a single copy of the book as part of a call for gifts for unaccompanied migrant children.
Despite this, the story was followed by various right-wing media outlets, including Fox News. One of the cable channel’s reporters even asked White House press secretary Jen Psaki about the alleged mass distribution of Harris’s book by the government, while Republican politicians suggested it was part of a plot. to direct government funds to Harris’s pocket.
Laura Italiano, a longtime New York Post journalist, is credited with writing the article. On Tuesday, she announced that she was resigning in the tabloid.

“Today I turned in my resignation to my editors at the New York Post,” she said. “The Kamala Harris story, an incorrect story that I was ordered to write and that I couldn’t push back strongly enough, was my breaking point.”
She added: “It has been a privilege to cover New York City for its most lively and witty tabloid, a newspaper full of reporters and editors that I deeply admire and have as friends. It saddens me to leave. ”
The bogus story is one of the first big challenges for newly arrived British editor-in-chief of the New York Post, Keith Poole, who until last month was in London as deputy editor of the Sun. He has been tasked with increasing traffic to the tabloid’s website, which has come under fire for writing stories about click-chasing that cast doubt on the safety of Covid-19 vaccines.
The New York Post’s bogus story about Harris was based on a single photograph of the book taken at a temporary immigration center in Long Beach, Southern California.
The article was briefly removed from the Post’s website, but was later reinstated with a footnote: “The original version of this article said that migrant children received Harris’s book in a welcome kit, but it was updated to note that only one known copy of the book was given to one child, ”the editor’s note read.
Before the story was partially retracted, it was used by leading Republicans to hint that public funds were being misused. Sen. Tom Cotton asked if the Biden administration was forcing taxpayers to buy Harris’s book to give to those illegal immigrants.
Ronna McDaniel, chair of the Republican National Committee, also asked: “After learning that officials are handing out Kamala Harris’s book to migrants at the border facility, it is worth asking … Was Harris paid? for these books? Is he profiting from the Biden border crisis? ”
The Washington Post revealed that the only copy of the book had turned up at the Long Beach facility as part of a collection of books.
