Who was Lachlan McLaren?
A driver has been charged after allegedly hitting and killing a child while accompanying his girlfriend home on her 16th birthday.
Schoolboy Lachlan McLaren died after being struck by a furniture-laden white ute on Melbourne’s Nepean Highway on Sunday afternoon.
The ute was reportedly seen accelerating erratically before climbing an intermediate strip, hitting the 16-year-old and his girlfriend.
McLaren died at the scene while his girlfriend was being treated for minor injuries.
Charged
The driver was arrested and charged overnight with guilty driving and causing death.
Tributes have been flowing in for the Year 10 student, even from her own school.
“ A beautiful soul has been taken from us when he was too young and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this most challenging time, ” Mentone Grammar wrote in a post.
Lachlan McLaren’s friend Fergus Rann told 7NEWS: ‘I was in complete shock, I didn’t want to believe it, I didn’t believe it at first when I heard it.’
A GoFundMe page has been created to support Mr. McLaren’s family during this difficult time.
The fundraiser has raised over $ 59,000 in less than 24 hours.
The 31-year-old alleged driver has been referred to appear before Melbourne Magistrates Court on December 17.
