Louis-Dreyfus’ incredible wealth comes primarily from his parents, Margarita and the late Robert Louis-Dreyfus, and from his father’s family business.
His family founded the Swiss-based Louis-Dreyfus group as a grain trading company in 1851 and Robert made it the world leader in agricultural products, as well as hedge fund and marine vessel management.
Robert became a well-known figure after bailing out companies like ad agency Adidas Saatchi & Saatchi and amassing his huge fortune. He later joined the family-owned commodity business founded by his great-grandfather, Leopold.
Forbes said in 1996, a year before Louis-Dreyfus was born, that he was “one of the most astute business minds in France,” where he owned the Olympique de Marseille football club.
The billionaire died at the age of 63 in Zurich in July 2009 of leukemia and his wife Margarita, who assumed the presidency, took over the family business.
But the following years were turbulent for the family, as Margarita fought for more than a decade with the relatives of her late husband over her inheritance.

Margaret was orphaned when she was 11 years old and was raised by her grandfather in Leningrad. She studied law and economics in Moscow and Leningrad before scourging electronic components in her native Russia.
But her life changed dramatically when she met Robert on a flight from Zurich to London in 1988 and they were married in 1992. They had three children, Eric in 1992 and twins Maurice and Kyril in 1997, before Robert died.
Since then, it is understood that she has a new partner: Philipp Hildebrand, vice president of the American investment management company BlackRock. She gave birth to her twins, Isabella Hildebrand and Arina Hildebrand, in 2016 when she was 53 years old.
The glamorous Margarita, whose retired second cousin is American actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, has said that her main goal is “to ensure the long-term survival of the company and the company name,” during an interview with Bloomberg in 2012.
This seems to be on the right track, as he bought Robert’s family shares in the Louis-Dreyfus group, increasing his shares from 50 per cent to 96 per cent, and posted an income of £ 26 billion in 2018. Forbes estimates that Margarita, 58, is worth roughly £ 4.25 billion.

In Sunderland, Louis-Dreyfus seeks to circumvent the lack of important silverware during his father’s time in Marseille. Robert became a majority shareholder in the French team in 1996, transforming the club’s fortunes after a match-fixing scandal that overshadowed the club.
He invested heavily in rebuilding the team and the club became popular with the new immigrant populations of Marseille. They reached two UEFA Cup finals under Robert’s ownership, but the big titles eluded them as they lost both times.
Ownership of the Ligue 1 club changed hands in 2016 when the family was sold to former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt.
The family also owned a small part of the Belgian Standard Liege: the club’s academy is named after Robert. Louis-Dreyfus regularly attended the Marseille games while his family controlled the club.
