A Washington, DC police officer who responded to the deadly riot at the United States Capitol on January 6 took his own life last month, making him the fourth police officer to participate in the events of that day to die from his own hand.

Cause of Death
DeFreytag died on July 10. He was described as a native of Pennsylvania and a five-year veteran of the DC force.
The officer’s obituary said that he held a memorial service in the nation’s capital over the weekend. His family has not said that his death was caused by the riots.

Early Monday, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that Officer Gunther Hashida, part of an Emergency Response Team within the department’s Special Operations Division, was found dead in his home last week. A GoFundMe page created by a relative describes Hashida as “a devoted and loving husband and father” who “worked to serve and protect the public.” The page had raised more than $ 71,000 as of Monday night.

The riot resulted in the deaths of five people, including the United States Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick. Three days after the riot, another Capitol police officer, Howard Liebengood, committed suicide. Metropolitan Police Officer Jeffrey Smith shot himself to death on January 15, the day after he was ordered to return to work.
Smith’s widow Erin told The Washington Post in February that one of the rioters hit Smith on the head with a stick during the chaos, causing him constant pain before his death.
More than 500 arrests have been made in connection with the attack and the FBI has said it is looking for hundreds of additional suspects.

Hours after Hashida’s death was announced, the MPD confirmed that Officer Kyle DeFreytag had also committed suicide in July.
“Officer Kyle DeFreytag, assigned to the Fifth District, was found deceased on Saturday, July 10, 2021,” an MPD spokesperson confirmed to CBS News. The spokesperson added that the cause of death was suicide.
