Koby Lee Francis Age
Koby Lee Francis is 22 years old.
The blatant shooting occurred outside the McKeesport police station, authorities said. Police said the suspect has already been searched for firearms and one has been confiscated. But there was apparently another one who was in hiding because as he was being pulled out of the police car, he opened fire on the officer, police said. He was handcuffed at the time, they said.
“When he got out of the car, he had a second pistol that we couldn’t locate and he shot our officer multiple times, hitting our officer at least twice,” said Adam Alfer, the McKeesport police chief.
Charged and arrested
Koby Lee Francis was arrested shortly after receiving an abuse protection order. (He was found parked outside a residence in violation of the order, police said.)
The Allegheny County Police Department is in charge of the investigation. CBS Pittsburgh reported that police in the area have established checkpoints on the McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge.
The officer, Gerasimos Athans, 32, is in stable condition at an area trauma center, according to Allegheny County Police. The four-year veteran of the force is expected to be released from the hospital in the next two days.
Police took a firearm from the vehicle and detained Francis. He was combative and kicked the window of the police car on the way to the police station, police said. When the officer opened the vehicle door upon arriving at the station, Francis shot him three times in the neck and torso with a second pistol.
Supporting McKeesport and county police in the investigation and search are the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, the Pennsylvania State Police, the State Attorney General’s Office, the Pittsburgh Police Office, the Federal Office of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives and the Office of the US Marshal Office.
