Who is Kimberly Lightford ?

Illinois State Senator Kimberly Lightford spoke about her ‘trauma’ after being abducted at gunpoint this week, revealing that she begged the trio of armed robbers not to shoot her before her husband opened fire on the criminals and tell him to run away.

Lightford, 53, a Democrat who has been criticized by conservatives for being “ soft on crime ” for trying to defund police departments in Illinois, was not physically harmed during the incident, part of which was captured on a Ring camera in suburban Chicago on Tuesday.

The Illinois carjacking took place less than a day after Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, 62, a fellow progressive Democrat from Philadelphia, was assaulted at gunpoint.

Speaking to reporters during a Christmas giveaway event Thursday, Lightford said of his ordeal: “I’m much better today. I didn’t realize what a traumatic event could do to an adult.”

Lightford and her husband, Eric McKennie

Lightford and her husband, Eric McKennie, were dropping off a friend in the 2000 block of South 20th Avenue in Broadview, a city 20 minutes outside of Chicago, Tuesday night when they said three masked men jumped from a Jeep Durango and they got closer. the couple’s Mercedes Benz SUV, WGN reported.

The thieves brandished weapons and demanded that the state senator and her husband hand over their car keys and other valuables.

“I begged them not to shoot us, not to shoot my husband or me,” she said. “I told them to take what they want. They took everything I had of value from me.

Lightford continued: “After they took our guns, they separated me and my husband.”

The state senator said her husband told her to run.

“I ran, reluctantly, because I didn’t want to leave it there,” Lightford said.

She added that she was afraid to run away and said: ‘I thought they were going to shoot me for sure.’

As Lightford fled, she recalled hearing gunshots. She said her husband, who has a concealment permit, exchanged shots with the suspects, but no one was injured.

Later, police found the couple’s stolen black SUV abandoned on Chicago’s West Side. So far, none of the assailants have been arrested.

In Philadelphia, law enforcement officials confirmed that FBI agents and state police arrested five people, four men and one woman, on Wednesday night in connection with the theft of Congresswoman Scanlon’s car.

Both women supported police reform policies last year after the Black Lives Matter movement, and both co-sponsored a bill in their respective offices to allow mental health specialists to be dispatched as first responders rather than police officers.

Lightford, the president of the Illinois Black Caucus, had also previously supported cutting police budgets in the state, and Chicago proposed slashing $ 59 million from its police department budget as violent crimes soar in Windy City.

The Scanlon incident came after Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said there is no ‘crisis of lawlessness’, even though robberies have skyrocketed 27 percent since 2020 and murders broke a all-time record this year.

And the attack on Lightford came just two days after Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot made a U-turn and asked for federal agents to help control city crime amid the proposed logging to the local police department. .

The car was located at the Christiana Mall in Delaware

Scanlon was walking toward his parked vehicle and was approached by two men driving a dark-colored van, WPVI reported.

They demanded his keys and then fled in his 2017 Acura MDX license plate LKG-8893. She had her car, purse, wallet and phone stolen, but she was not injured, she confirmed her office for her.

The car was located at the Christiana Mall in Delaware, where the five suspects were detained. Police have not said whether charges have been filed.

“I am relieved that Congresswoman Scanlon was not physically injured, and my thoughts are with her during this difficult time,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said in a statement.

“PPD will continue to provide necessary support in this case and will work diligently with our federal partners to help bring those responsible to justice.”

DailyMail.com has reached out to the Philadelphia Police Department for additional comment.

In a statement about the robbery, Scanlon spokeswoman Lauren Cox said: ‘On Wednesday afternoon, around 2:45 p.m., Congresswoman Scanlon was abducted at gunpoint in FDR Park following a meeting in that place’.

She added: ‘The congresswoman was physically unharmed. She thanks the Philadelphia Police Department for her quick response and appreciates the efforts of both the Sergeant at Arms in D.C. as well as her local police department for coordinating with the Philadelphia Police to ensure her continued safety. ‘

The crime against Congresswoman Scanlon comes at the end of a violent year in Philadelphia under ‘progressive prosecutor’ Krasner, who won re-election this year.
