A Colombian student, Héctor Enrique Valencia, arrested for the death of a sex worker abroad, Kimberley McRae, was returned to Sydney and is today charged with his murder.

Hector Enrique Valencia Age

Hector Enrique Valencia, 21, was arrested by local authorities on the Caribbean island of Aruba in February for the death of Coogee Kimberley McRae.

The body of the 69-year-old transgender woman was found on January 14 in her Mount Street apartment in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

Valencia briefly appeared before the local central court via video link on Thursday, where he did not request bail and was due to appear in court again on January 19, 2021.

Court documents show that police claim they killed Ms McRae around 3:30 p.m. on January 8, 2020, before fleeing Australia in the following days.

This led to a month-long manhunt that followed her travels through Asia and South America before landing in Aruba, a nation affiliated with the Netherlands that has an extradition treaty with Australia.

Daily Mail Australia

The Daily Mail Australia can show that Strike Force Onshore detectives, after nine months in prison, went to Aruba to search for Valencia and took him back to Sydney in armed custody in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

He was taken to the Surry Hills Police Station and charged with an outstanding murder warrant.

Danny Doherty, commander of the NSW Police Homicide Squad, said the process had been long and will now result in the quarantine of Valencia and the four officers who brought him to Australia.

“The man was in Aruba, Aruba is a constituent country of the Netherlands. We have an extradition agreement with the Dutch, ”Detective Doherty said.

The governor of Aruba gave his final approval to the extradition.

“It was a logistical challenge due to COVID-19 and obviously the restrictions prolonged travel and the pandemic in general, so the police had to take great precautions.

“Our police have been in quarantine for 14 days. The 21-year-old defendant has now been detained in Corrections and is now in isolation per policy. ”

Ms. McRae’s twin sister Karen, who reportedly raised the alarm when she couldn’t be reached, made a statement Tuesday.

In it, she said it was an “incredibly difficult” time for her family and praised the NSW Police for their efforts to seek justice amid a global pandemic.

“It is incredibly difficult to put into words what our family has been through since Kimberley’s death,” said Karen McRae.

“Kimberley was a treasured member of our family with a unique and vibrant personality. We cry to Kimberley every day and always try to understand that we will never see her again. ”

Valencia moved to Sydney in mid-2019

Valencia moved to Sydney in mid-2019 on a student visa, attended English school in the second semester of last year, and business school in the first weeks of this year.

Students from Surry Hills College told Daily Mail Australia after his arrest that the man with the baby face only appeared for two days and then suddenly disappeared.

“He had such a young baby face and was very calm,” said a former classmate.

“He hadn’t been there for very long. I think he entered two classes and then disappeared, it was in early January and we never saw him again. ‘

A photo of Valencia sitting in class was posted to Facebook on January 7, the same day police said Ms McRae was last seen alive.

NSW Police say Valencia returned to South America the day after Ms McRae died.

He first returned to his native Colombia before visiting a relative on the Caribbean island of Aruba.

Completely unconscious, police were on his tail and continued to post photos of him on Caribbean social media in February – less than a fortnight before his arrest.

Homicide detectors then worked with the Commonwealth Attorney General, who coordinated the operation with authorities in Aruba.

Valence is believed to have lived near Matraville in the south-east
