Who was Kim Sampson ?

The investigations have opened to the death of two new mothers who died of herpes and “could have been infected by the same surrogate surgeon who performed their caesarean sections.”

Kim Sampson, 29, and Samantha Mulcahy, 32, gave birth within weeks of each other at different hospitals within the East Kent NHS Trust in 2018.

The two women had been operated on by the same surgeon, who may have been the source of the infection, a BBC investigation revealed in November.

Investigations into their deaths were opened by Central and Southeastern Kent Coroner Katrina Hepburn at the Archbishop’s Palace in Maidstone on Tuesday.

The court heard that Ms. Sampson, a Whitstable hairdresser, gave birth by emergency cesarean section due to an obstructed delivery at Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate on May 3, 2018.

Cause of Death

She was discharged two days later, but was later readmitted on May 10 following a referral from her GP.

Subsequent laparotomies found that Ms Sampson had suffered from acute kidney failure before dying of cardiac arrest at King’s College Hospital in London on May 22, 2018.

An autopsy revealed 1A multiple organ failure, 1B spread of herpes simplex infection and pelvic candidiasis, 1C recent third-trimester cesarean section, and 2 multiple laparotomies as cause of death.

Meanwhile, Ms. Mulcahy underwent a C-section at William Harvey Hospital in Ashford on June 26, 2018, just over a month after Ms. Sampson’s death.

The nursery nurse, from Hawkinge, was 34 weeks pregnant when she went into labor.

Ms Mulcahy was found to have suffered obstetric cholestasis, as well as acute kidney injury and increased blood pressure.

She also developed respiratory problems after giving birth.

An abdominal CT scan revealed an enlarged liver and blood clotting, and as a result, she underwent a life support ECMO procedure.

However, while she was in the operating room, she suffered cardiac arrest and died.

Ms. Hepburn told the court that her cause of death was established as multiple organ failure 1A, disseminated herpes simplex infection 1B, and recent third-trimester cesarean delivery 1C.

The coroner said: “ The cases were investigated in 2018 and 2019, but were discontinued.

Since then, it has come to light that there may have been an infection as a result of the C-sections.

‘At the time of the discontinuation, it was not known when the herpes infection developed and new evidence now shows that it may have been at the time of the procedure.

“This requires further investigation and an investigation is opened.”

The related hearings were postponed until February 21 at the same court for a pre-investigation review.

The BBC investigation uncovered documents showing that the virus that infected both women was genetically identical.

Peter Greenhouse, a s*xual health consultant

Peter Greenhouse, a s*xual health consultant for more than 30 years, said the virus likely entered the abdomen of women during caesarean sections.

Speaking at the time of the investigation, the families welcomed the inquiries.

Yvette Sampson, Kim’s mother, said: ‘We’ve wanted this since Kim died in 2018; she’s been a long time coming.

“We hope that we can finally get answers to the questions we’ve always had, both for ourselves and for Kim’s children.”

Ryan Mulcahy, Samantha’s husband, added that “not knowing what happened has compounded the pain and suffering.”

Her mother, Nicky, said she hoped the investigations would help close the families and better understand how the deaths occurred.

She added: ‘How did Sam and Kim get the virus and from where? You feel stuck and can’t move on because you don’t have the answers you should have. ‘

Dr. Rebecca Martin, East Kent Hospitals Medical Director, said in November: “Our condolences go out to the families and friends of Kimberley and Samantha.

“We will do all we can to support these investigations and our thoughts are with the Kimberley and Samantha families at this time.”
