The identity of the 48-year-old official was released Monday night by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Justice.
Potter graduated from his Minnesota police officer in 1995 at the age of 22 and soon after began working for the Brooklyn Center Police Department. This is evident in government documents reviewed by the Star Tribune, which first named the officer.
Throughout his career, Potter was part of the ministry’s negotiating team, the newspaper reported.
Potter was placed on administrative leave after the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright.
Brooklyn Center Police Chief Time Gannon said the officer mistook his gun for a Taser.
Police body camera footage released Monday shows officers like him “Taser!” Tasers! “When others were fighting Wright in his car.
The video shows Wright getting out of his car, getting behind the wheel and driving.
“My God,” the officer said in the video. “I just shot him!”
Potter is married to a former cop. He has two adult children, according to the Tribune.
In August 2019, he was one of the first officers to respond to the police shooting at Kobe Dimock-Heisler, according to the report.
Potter ordered two officers involved in the shooting to “leave the residence, patrol separately, turn off the body cameras and not speak to each other,” according to a Hennepin district attorney report.
