Kiernan Forbes Biography
Rapper AKA, whose birth name is Kiernan Forbes, was shot dead on Friday in Durban, South Africa. He was 35 years old.
News24 confirmed with local police that a “well-known rapper”, believed to be Forbes, was fatally shot outside a popular nightspot on Florida Road in Durban.
“I can confirm that two men were killed and one of them is a well-known rapper. The police will not release any names of the victims until a full investigation is completed,” police spokesman Robert Netshiunda told the outlet.
Death Statement
Forbes’s parents verified their son’s death in a statement on Saturday. “It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son,” Tony and Lynn Forbes told The Post. “We are awaiting further details from the Durban police.”
The South African rapper was reportedly scheduled to perform in Durban on Friday. He was due to release a new album, “Mass Country,” on February 27.
Shooting
Paramedic Garrith Jamieson told TimesLIVE the shooting happened shortly after 10:15 p.m. local time and that, upon arrival, “paramedics were met with total chaos and a scene in which two men, believed to be in their 30s, sustained multiple gunshot wounds.”
“Paramedics assisted the men and unfortunately the first man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the scene,” he added.
Unidentified Victim
The second unidentified male victim later died, despite life-saving efforts, the outlet reported.
Fans and other artists flocked to Twitter and Instagram on Friday to share their condolences and heartbreak for AKA, who was born on January 28, 1988.
The rapper had posted on Instagram early Friday about his upcoming album release, and now the comment section is full of heartbreak emojis. He, too, appeared to tweet just before the shooting, responding to a fan online.
In the responses, fans posted “RIP” along with heart emoticons and expressed how “concerned” they are for his safety. Others begged the rapper to post something to confirm that he is alive.
“Is it true, brother? Are you alright?” wrote a user.
“Are you alright mate?” tweeted another.
“We’re all waiting for you to tweet something,” another pleaded.
Forbes’s parents remembered him as a “son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend” and “most importantly, the father of his beloved daughter, Kairo,” whom he shared with an ex, DJ Zinhle.
The artist, also known as Supa Mega, has drawn more than 489,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, with his biggest hits being “Lemons (Lemonade),” “Fela in Versace” and “All Eyes on Me.” His most recent release was the single “Prada” earlier this year.
The rapper lost his fiancée, Anele “Nelli” Tembe, when she fell to her death in 2021.
