A man suspected of a series of random assaults on women in a Brooklyn subway station was arrested Tuesday and charged with a series of hate crimes, authorities said.
Khari Covington, 29, is accused of attacking nine women in separate instances in East Williamsburg since last August, according to police.
Seven of the alleged assaults occurred in transit, primarily at the Morgan Avenue subway station, while two were committed near street level, police said.
Covington targeted fair-skinned women, sources said.
His arrest comes a day after police said he also assaulted a 27-year-old worker at a smoke shop on Wilson Avenue near Noll Street around 4:50 p.m.
Police said Covington broke into the store and went behind the counter, where he struck the woman, knocked her to the ground and wrapped his arm around her neck.
Covington allegedly also tried to rob the business, but left empty-handed. The victim of the latest attack refused to receive medical attention.
The arrest also came after one of the women recently attacked in the subway criticized the NYPD for failing to alert the public to the pattern of assault.
“I was surprised that this had happened so many times,” Bianca Fortis, a 32-year-old journalist, said Monday.
“I didn’t see any police stationed there. There were no flyers, ”said Fortis, who was left with multiple bruises on her face, shoulder and chest when she was attacked while leaving the station on December 28.
Covington was charged with the attack on Fortis.
Police had previously arrested Benny Watts, 50, in connection with his attack and three other people at the station.
But a senior NYPD official told NBC New York that Watts was mistakenly arrested and his charges were dropped.
Covington’s alleged spree inside the Morgan Avenue station began on November 11 and his most recent attack was on Saturday, police said.
Most of the victims were in their 20s, according to police.
In the first reported incident related to his arrest Tuesday, Covington allegedly pushed a woman who had just finished jogging out of an apartment building on Morgan Avenue near Rock Street last August.
Covington was charged with eight counts of assault as a hate crime and one count of attempted robbery as a hate crime, according to police.
