Kevin Peterson Jr. is the 21-year-old African-American man who was shot and killed by Clark County sheriff’s deputies the night of October 29 in Hazel Dell, near Vancouver, Washington.
Peterson was identified as the victim of the shooting by his girlfriend and the mother of his son, Olivia Selto, on Twitter. Peterson’s friend, artist Jake Thompson, also identified the 21-year-old as the victim. Heavy has reached out to Selto and Thompson for further comment on the shooting. Heavy contacted the Clark County Sheriff’s Department for comment, but was referred to the Camas Police Department, which handled the investigation independently.
Deputies Responded to the Area After Receiving Reports of a ‘Contact Suspect’
The Vancouver Columbian reports that the shooting took place along Highway 99 northeast of the city. The newspaper says the investigation focuses on a US Bank parking lot along the highway. The Columbian reports that agents were dispatched to the area after receiving a report about a “contact suspect.” It was at 5:29 p.m. local time. Paramedics were called to the scene at 5:56 p.m. A witness told The Columbian that he saw a person involved in an “altercation” with police. The man was “running,” the witness said. Peterson Was Face Timing With the Mother of His Child When the Shooting Took Place
Olivia Selto told The Columbian that she was on the phone with Peterson before the shooting. Selto said he stayed on the phone with Peterson for nine minutes “until the police finally came over and hung up the phone.” Selto added: “I heard her last words and everything. I am devastated and we will obtain justice for his wrongful death. ”
In a Twitter post, Selto said he was finding his timing with Peterson when the shooting occurred. Selto in a separate tweet, “Kevin did everything for me … no matter what it was or what time he always came when I asked. I’m sorry for every discussion, please come back.”
In an interview with The Oregonian, Peterson’s father, Kevin Peterson, said authorities did not allow him to see his son’s body until nearly 12 hours after the shooting. Peterson graduated from Union High School in Vancouver as part of the class, moving to the area from Portland during high school. according to The Oregonian.
The Shooting Has Led to Protests in the Area
KATU reported on October 29 that “a few dozen protesters” gathered at the site where Peterson was killed. A Twitter user with the username @MacSmiff posted several videos and photos of the area around Highway 99. The user said Peterson’s family was at the scene. The user tweeted that he knows the victim’s sister and added: “Kevin Peterson was 21 with a daughter who is not yet 1. He has to grow up without a father because police officers shoot blacks in the back regularly.
