Who is Kevin K. Dawkins?
A man charged with gun violations in the Saturday night shooting that killed two people and wounded twelve was arrested in a nearby town.
Local and state officials announced the arrest of 36-year-old Kevin K. Dawkins on Monday morning at a news conference chaired by Gov. Phil Murphy. They declined to comment on how he would be involved at 11:30 p.m. On Saturday, a shooting at a home on East Commerce Street in Fairfield caused revelers to scatter as they fled the gunfire.
New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said the shooting at a birthday party was a “targeted attack” and officials expect more arrests.
According to the report, police in Bridgeton, a neighboring city and the county seat of Cumberland, received an anonymous phone call after the shooting that reported a person with a gun in a wooded area behind the apartments in Maplewood Gardens.
Officers arrived at the Maple Drive apartments and found Dawkins “lying next to a tree with a gun in his right hand,” the complaint says. Officers ordered Dawkins to drop the gun, and he did, the document says.
Records show that Dawkins’ arrest by Agent Dominic Pizzo took place around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. The pistol is a Glock 23 .40 caliber model loaded with 22 rounds.
Dawkins lives in the 800 block of East Commerce Street, which, along with the Maple Street apartments, is less than three miles from the site.
Michael Gaimari said?
Bridgeton Police Chief Michael Gaimari said in a statement that Pizzo and officers were assisting New Jersey State Police at the shooting range shortly before the arrest and that all information related to Dawkins’ arrest was it had happened to that agency.
“It was a great job of Officer Pizzo and other officers to help arrest this suspect without hurting themselves or the suspect because he could have gone south quickly,” Gaimari said.
Dawkins was originally arrested on four firearms charges, including illegal possession of a firearm, possession for an illegal purpose, and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. Later Monday, records revealed that Bridgeton police had filed two additional charges against Dawkins for possession of a weapon as a convicted felon.
He appeared in Cumberland County Superior Court Monday afternoon for a virtual appearance. He will reappear for a hearing Thursday in which the Cumberland County prosecutor will announce that he is being held pending trial, attorney Jennifer Webb-McRae said.
Webb-McRae refused to enter Dawkins Monday night, citing an ongoing investigation.
Asia Hester, 25, and Kevin Elliott, 30, were killed in the shooting and several victims remain in hospital Monday.
