Kavion Poplous is a Western Illinois University freshman who is accused of shooting his roommate on the night of September 15. The incident was described as “isolated”.
According to a news release from the school, a shooting was reported at the Thompson Hall residence building on the school’s Macomb campus at 10:38 p.m. The suspect and the victim are residents of Thompson Hall. At the time of the shooting, a fire alarm was activated in the building and he was evacuated. A student was shot during the incident. The suspect, named Poplous, 18, fled the scene. The statement said Poplous “considers himself armed and dangerous.”
As a result of the shooting, all classes at Western Illinois University were suspended on September 16. The press release added: “All buildings, including residences, will be locked.” As of this writing, on September 16, authorities were searching for Poplous. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and was armed with a black pistol. Traffic from the scanners indicated that Poplous could be driving a black Nissan Altima with a license plate reading CA91734.
Kavion Poplous Victim’s Condition Not Released
WEEK reported that the victim was taken to McDonough District Hospital in Macomb and then transferred to another hospital. The outlet reported that the victim’s condition has not been disclosed.
While the victim has not been named, a WIU spokesperson said he was Poplous’ roommate in the bedroom, WGEM reported.

Western Illinois University maintains a gun-free campus, reads a message on the university’s website. Only those “exempt by federal or state law or by University regulation” from carrying a firearm may do so on campus. The policy extends to students, employees, and “persons visiting or conducting business at WIU.” The punishment for a student who has brought a firearm onto the school campus can be “up to and including expulsion from WIU.”

According to his LinkedIn page, Poplous is a Chicago native and attended Wendell Phillips Academy High School in Chicago. Poplous graduated from high school in 2020. Poplous wrote on her page: “I’m from ‘Englewood’ which is the south side of Chicago and I just want to have an impact on my youth to show you that rapping and playing ball is not the only way out the hood. ” Poplous said that in high school he was actively involved in music and poetry societies.

On her LinkedIn profile, Poplous said that she is “very realistic” and that she goes out of her way to “be understanding.” Poplous described her first “real job” as being a barista at a Starbucks where “she worked for [her] future, I gave it my all and that’s something special about me that my priorities are my first thing.” Poplous said he will “handle anything” to help him in the future. Poplous brought her skills like critical thinking, strategy, and leadership.
Poplous launched her own podcast in July 2020. In the most recent episode, Poplous spoke about the effects COVID-19 was having on her education.
