Who is Katie Sorensen?
Katie Sorensen is an influential mother who went viral in December 2020 after sharing a couple of videos on her Instagram account claiming that her children were about to be kidnapped. Sorensen alleged that the incident occurred at Michael’s craft store in Petaluma, California, and a local Latino couple attempted the crime.
Sorensen had only 6,000 followers on Instagram when she posted a video in which she claimed that her children had almost been kidnapped in the city of Petaluma.

Sorensen has been confirmed to be lying and was charged with giving false information to the police. The Sonoma, California mother faces two misdemeanor charges for posting false accusations against the couple on her Instagram page, which garnered millions of views.
As soon as the videos were uploaded, she became widely shared and engaged, which made her go viral almost immediately and her follower count jumped to 80,000. However, many of these people also accused her of painting a false narrative, including the police, as they detected inconsistencies in her story.
Sorensen has an Instagram account called @motherhoodessentials and while this page still exists on Instagram, her personal account and the two videos she posted have been made private since the allegations came to light. Police in the city of Petaluma, in Northern California, said that the story that Sorensen told his followers, that the information he gave to his followers, was not the same that he told them and that they did not have enough information to make a case.

Sorensen shared the video saying that talking about it makes her uncomfortable, but she was doing it just to raise awareness.
“I think right now we are so distracted by everything that is happening in the world that we have our guard up for masks and we want to keep our children safe in such a way that we are forgetting the most important way to keep them safe. , and that’s with us and so they don’t take them away, ”he said.

In a statement to the Petaluma Police Department, she alleged that she was “followed inside the store” by a man and a woman who had “made comments about the appearance of [his hers] children of hers.”
“The couple was said to have followed the woman to her car, where the couple stayed near the stroller while the woman placed her children in the vehicle.”
According to another report, Sorensen said in her video that in addition to discussing the “characteristics” of her children, one of them tried to “reach out, as if to grab the stroller” at one point. Later, Ella Sorensen added that she wanted to do more, but she froze at the time.
“I saw these people, they didn’t necessarily look clean,” she told KTVU. “I was uncomfortable with them, and instead of making them uncomfortable with my discomfort, I chose to remain in my discomfort.”

“Yes, racism is alive and well in 2020. This is a perfect example of it.” Sadie said that he was once acquitted of any crime by the police. She made the statement at a rally outside the store attended by people who apologized to Sorensen’s partner.
“Getting up to go shopping one day and then being accused of trying to kidnap someone’s children is heartbreaking,” Sadie had said.
“Do you really think it’s okay to go online, be racist, and do stories about a family?” she asked. “It’s hard enough being a Latino family in a white community,” she said. She identified herself and her husband after police released a CCTV image of them and asked for a witness to appear.
“I couldn’t believe it. It’s like we’re literally guilty of being dark while shopping,” Sadie had said at a press conference.

According to sources, the Petaluma Police Department sent the case to the District Attorney’s office after they completed the investigation. Sorensen has been charged with two misdemeanors and the maximum sentence for each of the charges is six months in prison.
