Who is Kathleen Stock ?

Feminist professor Kathleen Stock resigned from her job at the University of Sussex after students carried out an ‘intimidation and harassment’ campaign to remove her from her post over a dispute over transgender rights.

Kathleen Stock OBE is a British philosopher who was professor of philosophy at the University of Sussex until October 2021. Professor Stock, 48, a gender and s*xual orientation expert who works for the University of Sussex, had been branded a ‘transphobic’ by some outraged students who called for her to be fired.

Early life

Stock grew up in Montrose, the son of a philosophy professor and a newspaper proofreader.She was a graduate of Exeter College, Oxford, and studied for an MA at St Andrews and a PhD at Leeds.

Academic work

Stock has written a monograph, as well as articles in peer-reviewed academic journals, and has contributed multiple chapters to edited volumes. She edited Philosophers on Music: Experience, Meaning, and Work (first edition 2007), and together with Katherine Thomson-Jones, she edited New Waves in Aesthetics (2008). In her monograph Only Imagine: Fiction, Interpretation and Imagination (2017), she defends the author’s intentionalism.

Until 2020, Stock was vice president of the British Aesthetic Society. She has lectured at the University of York, the Aristotelian Society, the London Aesthetics Forum, the University of Wolverhampton, the American Aesthetic Society.

Professor Stock said in her tweet that she was “sad to announce” that she was leaving.

“It has been a very difficult few years, but the approach of the leaders more recently has been admirable and decent.

“I hope that other institutions in similar situations can learn from this,” she added.
