Haub, 58, was training for a ski touring race when he disappeared under the famous Swiss Matterhorn on the southern border with Italy.
He was last seen on April 7, 2018 when he was riding a chairlift with skis and a backpack. The following morning, he was reported missing to the police because he had not shown up at his hotel in the Swiss town of Zermatt.
The billionaire’s family stopped looking for him a week after he was reported missing, according to The Associated Press, and the search was officially called off in October 2018.
The district court in Cologne, where Haub lived, declared him dead on Friday.
Karl’s younger brother Christian was appointed CEO of Tengelmann after the disappearance.
