California Rep. Karen Bass Announced She Will Run For Mayor Of Los Angeles

‘With all my heart, I am ready. Let’s do this – together. I’m running for mayor, ” she tweeted Monday, after sources leaked a likely race on Friday.

The six-term lawmaker is the ninth House Democrat to announce her retirement or an effort to seek another office. She is a former Speaker of the State Assembly who led the Congressional negotiations on George Floyd

Democrats have only a three-vote majority in the House, and out-of-year elections are often a challenge for the party in power.

But a handful of House Republicans and Republican senators have also announced their decisions not to seek reelection, at a time when former President Donald Trump is contemplating a race and is running in the primaries to try to bring down the Republicans who voted to impeach him.

Unlike retired Rep. Cheri Boustos (D-Ill.), Who has a Trump district, and Rep. Ron Kind (D-Wis.), Who won his last race by just three percentage points, the Los Angeles district de Bass is strongly a Democrat.

California will lose a seat due to redistricting.

Bass is close to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, and entered politics after working as a medical assistant and community organizer.

He won his last race comfortably with 86 percent of the vote.

Nine House Democrats and nine House Republicans have announced that they will not seek reelection in 2022.

Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer, Council Member Kevin de Leon and Council Member Joe Buscaino are among those who have announced their own mayoral campaigns.
