Who is Kallista Mutten?

Kallista Mutten shared a whirlwind romance with her fiancé before he allegedly murdered their nine-year-old daughter Charlise while police waited to question the mother at the hospital.

Justin Stein, 31, was charged with murdering the schoolgirl and was denied bail yesterday after his body was found in a barrel in bushland near the Colo River in northwest Sydney.

Police allege that Ms. Mutten, 31, left Charlise in her care last Tuesday, and court documents show detectives allege that Stein killed her within 15 hours.

Detectives have not had a chance to ask Ms Mutten key questions about the alleged events after she suffered a “medical episode” and collapsed one day in search of her daughter.

Social Media Post

Social media posts show the pair shared a quick romance, announcing they were in a relationship about a year after Ms Mutten, a former ice addict who served time in jail, was released from prison.

In a beloved photo from December 2020, Ms Mutten, 31, could be seen leaning in to kiss Stein as the couple lay in bed.

Ms. Mutten had been released from jail

Ms. Mutten had been released from jail in 2019 after serving a two-year prison sentence for dangerous driving causing death and driving under the influence of drugs.

In November 2020, Ms. Mutten showed her affection for Stein by commenting on a selfie photo that she posted on Facebook.

‘Mmmm yes,’ she wrote. ‘Absolutely gorgeous.’

She also shared a photo of the church where she planned to marry Stein, writing “nice church near her family’s home” next to a photo of the chapel. It was in that same month that the couple announced their engagement.

Charged

Charlise’s mother Kallista Mutten’s fiancé Justin Stein (pictured) has been charged with murder

Charlise, who was in the full-time custody of her grandparents on the Gold Coast, was vacationing with her mother and stepfather at the Blue Mountains property when she was reported missing Friday.

Homicide detectives followed Stein’s footsteps using CCTV after he allegedly bought five 20kg sandbags from Bunnings, filled a boat with fuel and then tried to launch it from a pier in inner Sydney.

After discovering that the boat was not working, police will allege that he then tried to dump the barrel containing Charlise’s body into the Colo River, but was unable to roll it due to the weight of the sandbags.

It is alleged that he instead left her in the bushes, where she was later discovered.

A blue tarp was also found on the back of the boat. The barrel has now been seized and will be forensically examined.

Police revealed at a news conference Wednesday that they will allege Stein talked about buying sandbags and boat fuel before traveling to the riverbed where he found the body of his stepdaughter.

Investigation

Police officers talk to each other at a mobile command post in Mount Wilson during the search for Charlise on Tuesday.

“(There were) multiple phone conversations to purchase multiple sandbags,” Deputy Police Commissioner David Hudson said.

Footage of Stein’s arrest was released Wednesday afternoon, showing the moment he walked from a car to a holding cell at the Surry Hills police station with his hands cuffed in front of him.

He was wearing a gray Everlast sweater and shorts that he was still dressed in when he appeared in court Wednesday morning.

Mrs. Mutten reported Charlise missing to the police on Friday morning.

The police fact sheet filed in court Wednesday indicates that police believe she may have been murdered several days before the phone call was made.
