Authorities were called to the home of 12-year-old Kaitlyn Yosviak on August 26. Her mother informed the 911 dispatcher that she was no longer responding. Paramedics took her to the nearby Navicent Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Kaitlyn was exposed to “excessive physical pain due to medical negligence”
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Kaitlyn was exposed to “excessive physical pain due to medical negligence” before her death. In an interview with NBC News, GBI Special Agent Mary Chandler said the family has been repeatedly investigated for child neglect.
“Basically, there has been a history with the Department of Family and Children’s Services in a number of counties in the area since the birth of the child,” Chandler told the station. “This condition of a child is the worst we have ever seen.”
Authorities arrested Kaitlin’s parents, John Joseph Yozviak and Katie Horton. Both parents face second degree murder and second degree child cruelty.
It was not immediately clear whether a plea had been made or whether a lawyer had been hired.
News of Kaitlyn’s death devastated her teachers at Clifton Ridge Middle School in Ivey, Georgia. “She was a very sweet and gentle girl,” Professor Lelin Holt told WMAZ-TV. “Always respectful, I never had a problem with her.”
“I’ve never seen anything great, nothing to report,” Holt added. “If I had done this, I certainly would have been in contact.”
In a statement to WMAZ, Kaitlyn’s maternal grandmother expressed grief over her granddaughter’s death and said she wanted custody of the girl. She attacked the authorities for not doing more to deal with Kaitlyn.
“If the system had done its job and saved Kaitlyn, I would have raised her.” Anna Horton said in the statement before saying her parents “deserved” to be arrested.
No date has been set for Kaitlyn’s funeral, but WMAZ reports that a funeral home in nearby Macon will pay for the service.
