Who was Kaden Reddick ?

Kaden Reddick died on February 13, 2017 after the tail barrier fell on her head at the Oracle shopping center in Reading, where she had just watched the hit movie Sing with her family at a neighboring cinema.

The owners of Arcadia, Sir Philip Green’s former retail empire, collapsed last year, selling their crown jewel Topshop to Asos for £ 330 million and Debenhams went to Boohoo for £ 55 million.

Today, the schoolboy’s heartbroken mother, Lisa Mallett, who had been in the store with her mother and her two daughters when Kaden died, confronted company representatives in Reading Crown Court.

More than four years after Kaden’s death, Arcadia Group Ltd, Realm Projects Ltd, Stoneforce Ltd and Topshop / Topman Ltd were charged with health and safety offenses in connection with the tragedy, primarily through unsafe practices.

Judge Heather Norton scheduled a provisional full trial date for January 10, 2022, which was scheduled to last 10 weeks.wikipedia

Death

Realm Projects was the manufacturer and Stoneforce was responsible for installing the barrier in the store, the court heard today.

James Ageros QC, prosecutor, said: “Kaden Reddick was killed when a barrier he had been playing on fell on top of him, causing fatal injuries.”

In the aftermath of the tragedy, it was alleged that more than a dozen barriers in shops across the UK were either improperly attached or not attached to the ground at all.

Today, Judge Norton ruled that a full day hearing would be needed to debate whether Reading City Council had the authority to prosecute crimes that were ‘not in their patch’.

In March last year, an investigation recorded his death as an accident, but revealed staff failures about what was called a ‘wobble test’ of the barrier.

Staff across the country were asked to test the barriers after another incident in Glasgow in which a 10-year-old girl was seriously injured, just days before Kaden’s death.

In pronouncing the verdict in the investigation, the president of the jury said that “the evidence shows that her fixations were inadequate to support the weight of her.”

However, the jury of eight men and three women decided that, although the 180 kg tail barrier was “poorly attached”, Kaden’s death was accidental.
