A 12-year-old boy died and a 19-year-old woman was seriously injured after a freight train crashed into her car in the California Bay Area on Wednesday, officials and reports said.
The vehicle was heading west on East Cypress in the city of Oakley around 1 p.m., just before the fatal accident on the tracks, city officials said in a Twitter post.
The boy, a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as Joshua Schaefer, by his mother, Melissa Schaefer, The East Bay Times reported.
The driver, a 19-year-old woman, was airlifted to a nearby hospital and is in critical condition.
The collision involved two other vehicles, local media reports said, though it was unclear whether those vehicles were also hit by the train or damaged by flying debris from the initial accident.

The impact overturned a vehicle and, after the accident, a victim with head injuries entered and lost consciousness, an official with the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District told the East Bay Times.
