US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Thursday that the Justice Department has filed charges against four former and current Louisville police officers in connection with the death of Breonna Taylor. The charges include crimes against civil rights, unlawful conspiracy, unconstitutional use of force and crimes of obstruction.
The Department of Justice has had an ongoing pattern or practice investigation at the Louisville Police Department since April 2021.
Federal charges allege that police officers forged the affidavit used to obtain the search warrant for Taylor’s home and that this act violated federal civil rights laws, resulting in her death. Former Louisville detective Kelly Goodlett and officer Joshua Jaynes have been charged with conspiracy for allegedly falsifying a search warrant affidavit, according to the justice department.
Charges have also been filed against Brett Hankison, a former Louisville Metropolitan Police officer who was involved in the death of Breonna Taylor. Hankison has been charged with two counts of disenfranchisement, both of which are civil rights crimes.
“We share, but cannot fully imagine, the pain felt by Breanna Taylor’s loved ones and all those affected by the events of March 13, 2020. Breonna Taylor should be alive today,” Garland said during a news conference.
The Justice Department has been conducting a separate ongoing investigation into Taylor’s death since mid-2020, with the department launching a wide-ranging investigation into LMPD’s practices. Officials were investigating whether LMPD uses “unreasonable force,” engages in “unconstitutional stops, searches, and seizures,” “illegally executes search warrants on private homes,” and discriminates on the basis of race or disability.
Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old Black woman, was killed on March 13, 2020 after the LMPD executed a warrant for her apartment.
