Joshua Calvin Hughes and Jerod Wade Hughes climbed out of a broken window onto the Capitol on January 6, and Jerod Hughes helped open a door to allow other rioters to enter, the FBI said in indictment papers filed Thursday.
The brothers were right behind the main assailant who chased Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman down the stairs, investigators said. Goodman managed to drive the crowd away from the Senate floor, which had not yet been evacuated.

Later, the brothers made it to the Senate floor, where they sat in the senators’ chairs and opened their desks, according to the cargo documents. The brothers were captured in numerous images and videos of the riots, according to court records.
Joshua and Jerod Hughes reported to the Helena Police Department on January 11, saying they had seen each other on news coverage and believed they were wanted by the FBI. An FBI agent answered. The brothers said they wanted to turn themselves in and have a lawyer present before being questioned. They were allowed to return home.
The FBI declined to comment on whether they are in custody or reveal their ages and places of origin. Court records only include the indictment documents and not the court dates. They were not on the list for Lewis and Clark County jails on Friday morning.
The brothers face charges of entering a restricted building, being on the Senate floor with the intent to disrupt the orderly conduct of official business, obstructing a law enforcement officer, obstructing an official proceeding, and damaging or helping to damage property from United States.
