Joseph Santiamo Wiki

                    Joseph Santiamo Biography

A seedy Staten Island doctor admitted to using his practice as a pill mill, soliciting s*xual favors from young patients in exchange for prescribing opioids, federal authorities announced.

Joseph Santiamo, 65, charged with conspiracy to distribute oxycodone before US District Judge Michael Shipp via video hearing.

The lewd doctor ran a practice from 2012 to 2018 that focused on internal medicine and geriatric care with a secondary hustle like a pill mill: throwing prescriptions for narcotics without a legitimate purpose in exchange for cash, according to a federal complaint from Nueva Sweater.

He took particular interest in his younger patients battling substance abuse

He took particular interest in his younger patients battling substance abuse and prescribed strong narcotics in exchange for s*xual favors, authorities said.

“These patients were all under the age of 40 and would not normally be treated by a geriatric care physician, according to prosecutors.

“Many of these patients were dealing with pain and addiction, and instead of getting help from their doctor, they plunged deeper into the cycle of drug abuse,” New Jersey US Attorney Craig Carpenito said in a statement.

The Drug Enforcement Administration began investigating Santiamo in 2017 after learning that patients traveled long distances to obtain potent narcotic prescriptions and use various pharmacies to fill them, according to court documents.

“Santiamo wrote prescriptions for controlled substances in doses that far exceed what might be medically necessary for an ordinary patient,” the complaint says.

Santiamo, who is free on a $ 250,000 bond, is scheduled to be sentenced on April 12, 2021 and faces up to 20 years in prison and a $ 1 million fine, court records show.

“This defendant not only violated his oath to help people, he took advantage of them when they were most vulnerable to his own selfish needs,” said DEA Special Agent in Charge Susan Gibson. “The only difference between him and a person who sells drugs on the street is the white lab coat he wears.”

His attorney, Chad Seigel, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Santiamo has been licensed in New York state since March 1984, online records from the state Department of Health show. Has a clean disciplinary record.

Advance records show that Santiamo has been advocating for quality end-of-life care for more than three decades.

He was named one of the “Best Doctors in New York

He was named one of the “Best Doctors in New York” by New York Magazine in 1997, 1999, and 2000, and he previously served on the board of the Staten Island Alzheimer’s Foundation.

In 2005, he received the Dr. Anthony Moretti Award for Medical Excellence in End-of-Life Care from University Hospice.

Advance reports also show that Santiamo was involved in a nasty dispute with his brother, the late Dr. Kenneth Santiamo, a chiropractor, dating back nearly nine years.

Dr. Joseph Santiamo sued his brother for $ 1 million, claiming that Dr. Kenneth Santiamo had tarnished his reputation and degraded him in front of patients and staff.
