Jaspreet Chahal sentenced to 11 and a half to 23 months in prison

Jaspreet Chahal was sentenced to between 11 1/2 and 23 months in prison, followed by two years of probation, the Berks County Prosecutor’s Office said Wednesday.

Chahal had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular manslaughter, reckless endangerment of another person and traffic reports, the prosecutor’s office said. Chahal was sued last year, PEOPLE previously reported, for the traffic accident in 2018.

In November of the same year, Chahal was driving a trailer truck in Berks County, Pennsylvania, and collided with “a line of parked vehicles” while talking on his cell phone, according to the prosecutor.

Chahal’s 18-wheeler collided with the car of Kathryn Schurtz, 35, and Joseph Kearney, 42, who were heading to Pittsburgh for their upcoming wedding. The couple’s car was forced to collide with four other large rigs, ABC 6 reported last year.

The accident occurred on Interstate 78 and set another trailer on fire, in addition to Chahal, Schurtz and Kearney’s vehicle. Other passengers were injured in the crash, which closed the highway for more than four hours, My Central Jersey previously reported.

“The victims had no chance to get out of there,” said police officer David Beohm previously.
