He smashed her girlfriend’s head against a window sill, leaving her covered in blood from a head wound, which later needed taping at the hospital.

In a recording of the 999 call played in court, the victim could be heard yelling ‘get off me!’ and out!” a number of times.

Pettigan, a renderer, could also be heard calling her obscene names, which he said while giving evidence was due to him seeing comedian Gervais in After Life.

Prosecutor Timothy Talbot-Webb asked him during cross-examination: ‘So it’s Ricky Gervais’ fault?’

Pettigan responded, “It’s not his fault, it’s just because he was on my mind.”

During the trial, the woman testified against Pettigan behind a screen, breaking down in tears as she recounted the ordeal.

She said: ‘She pulled me back so hard that I flew backwards and hit my head on the window sill.

“I put my hands to my head and they were covered in blood.

‘It was the worst headache I’ve ever had. I asked her to leave, but she was wandering around the house.

Police found her lying on the floor of her house with a bandage around her head and bloody hair.

Pettigan, from Droitwich, was found guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm following a trial at Worcester Magistrates Court yesterday.

He claimed that he was acting in self-defense and that she was “fabricating” the attack, but the magistrates rejected her version of events.

Pettigan had previously admitted to another ABH against the same victim, committed while she was out on bail for the first attack.

During the second round, he punched her twice in the face and pinned her with his left hand to her throat.

Mr Talbot-Webb added: “She also bit his finger. She ran towards the neighbors visibly upset and bleeding from the nose.

Due to the seriousness of the offence, Pettigan was taken into custody and will appear in Worcester Crown Court on May 27 for sentencing.
