John Stevenson Biography
Who was John Stevenson ?
BBC announcer John Stevenson has likely already died of natural causes when his partner and full-time caretaker attempted to lift his body before collapsing and dying at his side, an investigation found out.
John Stevenson, 68, was found dead on the floor of his living room in Aberdare, Wales, with the body of his partner, Mark Turner, beside him.
During an investigation into Mr Stevenson’s death, the South Wales Central Forensic Court heard that the discovery was made on 12 March 2020 by police who had broken into his rented townhouse.
A district nurse had expressed her concern after she was unable to speak to the former BBC Wales political correspondent or her partner.
John Stevenson Cause of Death
The exact circumstances of Mr. Stevenson’s death are unknown, but it is likely that he died of natural causes due to his poor health after suffering a stroke, the court heard.
It is understood that an investigation into the death of Mr. Turner is not underway, for which no evidence of the circumstances was provided.
Mr. Stevenson was discovered sitting on the floor of the living room, which was used as his bedroom, while Mr. Turner’s body was lying face down next to him.
Consulting forensic pathologist Dr. Stephen Leadbeatter performed an autopsy on the former journalist’s body and performed various tests, but was unable to establish the cause of death.
Dr. Leadbeatter said: “The younger man’s arms appeared to be in a position suggesting an attempt on his part to lift the other man.”
“I further understood that crime scene investigators had not seen anything suggestive of violence or a fight on the premises.”
Experts ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning as well as an ‘electrical accident’, the Pontypridd investigation said.
Dr Leadbeatter added, “While I cannot offer a specific anatomical explanation for death, I found no evidence to indicate that trauma played a role in death.”
He gave the cause of death as ‘not determined’.
The investigation heard that Stevenson retired in 2013 and moved from North Wales to Aberdare in 2017.
Her friend Bethan Price, a former BBC colleague, said her last contact with Turner was on February 26.
She said that Mr. Stevenson had suffered a second stroke in 2017 and his mobility and speech deteriorated, with Mr. Turner acting as his full-time caregiver for him.
She said: ‘I was in regular contact with Mark. My last contact with Mark was on February 26th. I texted him again on March 8 and got no response. John’s daughter contacted me on March 13 to notify me of his death.
The investigation heard that a nurse came to her home on March 5 for a routine appointment, but could not get a response.
Police were alerted when a follow-up call was made a week later, to which there was no response.
James Morris, a South Wales police detective, said: “Both gentlemen passed away in the hall.
“Looks like Mark may have been trying to lift Mr. Stevenson off the floor.”

He said: ‘Mr. Stevenson had a medical history of stroke and significantly reduced mobility.
‘On March 12 he was found dead on the floor of the living room of his house by the police responding to a welfare problem.
Also present was his deceased partner who cared for him. The property was secure and there was no suspicion of anyone else’s involvement.
