John Shallerhorn Biography
John Shallerhorn is identified as the suspect who killed New Orleans police officer Martinus Mitchum while intervening in an altercation at a high school basketball game on Friday, authorities said. According to Tulane University, a shooting occurred during a basketball game at Carver High School.

According to Superintendent Shaun Ferguson, a basketball game was taking place at George Carver High School when an individual, later identified as John Shallerhorn, attempted to enter the game without a mask and was arrested. Police say there was a riot.
Ferguson said the sheriff intervened and tried to get Shallerhorn out of the building.
Shallerhorn then pulled out a gun and shot the deputy sheriff, Mithun, in the chest, according to Ferguson.
Ferguson said the deputy sheriff was taken to UMC where he later died.
John Shallerhorn arrested
According to booking information on the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office website, John Shallerhorn was arrested for armed robbery and first-degree murder of a police officer. Shallerhorn was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on Friday night.
He appeared in Magistrates Court on Saturday, according to court records. Police say the shooting occurred in the 3000 block of Higgins Boulevard.
Just before the shooting, Shallerhorn is charged with committing an armed robbery, according to the NOPD. A victim was sitting inside his vehicle in the school parking lot when he was accosted by the suspect, identified as Shallerhorn, according to reports.
Shallerhorn allegedly lifted his shirt and brandished a gun as he demanded the victim’s medallion chain. The victim complied, the NOPD said.

“We are deeply saddened by the senseless and tragic death of Corporal Martinus Mitchum of the TUPD. Corporal Mitchum was a dedicated law enforcement professional who had a heart of service to the Tulane community. We have reached out to his family and are supporting his fellow officers during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and with all the fellow officers he served with. “
