The incident occurred on a Metro bus platform that is part of the Pentagon Transit Center, the Pentagon Protection Force Protection Agency tweeted. The facility is just steps from the Pentagon Building, which is located in Arlington County, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.
An Associated Press reporter near the building heard multiple shots, then a pause, then at least one additional shot. Another AP reporter heard police yelling “shooter.”
All entrances to the Pentagon were secured after the attack, except the one that runs from the Metro. All were reopened according to Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman. The subway station had also been reopened at 8:00 p.m. except the entrance closest to the shooting area. Whitman said the subway entrance is likely to remain closed overnight.
The subway station is next to the Pentagon. It was redesigned after the terrorist attacks of September 11; travelers can no longer enter the building directly. Instead, they must go up an escalator to the surface and go through a security check outside the building doors.
A Pentagon announcement said the facility was closed due to “police activity.” The agency responsible for security at the building, the Pentagon’s Force Protection Agency, tweeted shortly before noon that the scene of the incident was safe. The lockdown was lifted except in the area around the crime scene.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, were at the White House meeting with President Joe Biden at the time of the shooting.
