Who is Joel Mangal ?
A suspect was arrested after throwing a Molotov cocktail into a Brooklyn deli and cutting a man’s hand on Saturday.
According to police, the incident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. when officers responded to a 911 call of an attack at a deli near Nostrand Avenue and Halsey Street.
Suspect
The suspect, identified as Brooklyn resident Joel Mangal, fled the scene on foot to Fulton Street.
Police who searched the area found the suspect and detained him.
“Fortunately, there was no loss of life here. The investigative work of the Explosives and Arson Task Force comprised of our Fire Chiefs, the New York Police Department and the ATF, led to the timely arrest of this suspect who threatened the safety of our communities through the use of such a cruel and destructive device, “said Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro.
Arrested and Charged
Mangal has been arrested and faces a number of charges including assault, attempted assault, arson, reckless danger, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal antics and threats.
Two workers from the deli shop fled the store after the attack. One of them suffered non-life threatening injuries, authorities said.
Mangal was arrested by FDNY fire marshals and charged with arson, assault, reckless danger, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal mischief, the department said.
Footage
Footage from outside the deli shows the suspect lighting one of the incendiary devices before throwing him out the front door.
The gas pump struck the interior near the deli display case, covering the glass and surrounding areas with flames, according to images from inside the store.
Mangal allegedly tried to throw a second Molotov cocktail into the deli, but was stopped by a witness and removed the explosive from his hand, footage shows.

Victim
They say a 38-year-old man allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at the deli at 496 Nostrand Avenue which resulted in damage and destruction. They say he also cut the hand of a 23-year-old male victim.
Firefighters responded quickly and brought the fire under control and provided medical treatment to a person with non-life threatening injuries.
