Joanna Brophy Biography
Who is Joanna Brophy?
Joanna Brophy, 32, told the driver: “You don’t belong in this country” after he dropped her off at her home in Warrington, Cheshire, at 1am. m. after a house party on June 4.
She also said ‘You bloody colored idiot’ as she stumbled out of Turkish-born Ozkan Koc’s private hire taxi with the three children.
The mother was the only adult in charge of her two daughters, ages seven and five, and an 11-year-old family friend who was staying the night.
Brophy was meant to take care of all the children in her house, but she was arrested after vilely abusing her.
Koc, 40, called police after thinking the female passenger was going to hit him during her tirade.
Arrested
After officers arrested Brophy on her property, she was left in her cells to sober up, but she claimed that she could barely remember what she had said to Mr. Koc.
At Warrington Magistrates Court, Brophy pleaded guilty to racially aggravated shaming and drunken charge of a child.
Victim
Prosecutor Laura Simpson said: ‘The affairs date back to June 4 in the early hours of the morning.
‘The defendant was with her two children of her five and seven years old, and a friend of one of the 11-year-old children. She took a one-way taxi to the defendant’s address.
The victim is the taxi driver. She said that she could tell that the defendant was drunk. ‘When they arrived at the defendant’s address, she abused the taxi driver, insulting him.
She said, ‘You are stupid. You don’t belong in this country’, and ‘Damn color shit’.
She then walked over to the driver’s door. The window was open and she raised her arm and the victim thought she was going to hit him.
As a result, she closed the window and called the police. Officers attended the defendant’s address. There was a knock at the door and the defendant opened it.
“She was very intoxicated and she was the only adult present in charge of three children.”
Interview
Ms Simpson said that in a subsequent police interview, Brophy could not remember what he had said to Mr Koc.
“She remembered asking her what country she was from and she was really sorry for any racist comments,” the prosecutor added.
“She confirmed that she was intoxicated caring for three children.”
Investigation
Brophy was also ordered to pay £215 in costs and victim surcharge, and to attend 25 days of rehabilitation activity with the probation service as part of a 12-month community order.
Chief Justice Alf Bean told him: ‘The court finds it extremely disappointing that you are required to appear in court at age 32 with no prior convictions.
“And appearing in court having behaved this way towards a taxi driver because of the color of her skin is totally unacceptable. We take a bad opinion of that.
This behavior was particularly bad, but was made worse by the fact that there were children there. Behaving in this way is totally unacceptable, it is reprehensible.
“However, I am aware that this appears to be a one-off incident. Don’t let it happen again.’
Earlier, after magistrates said they had read Brophy’s parole report, attorney Susan Hedges, representing her, said: “It’s a comprehensive and helpful report and there’s not much to add.”
